# Practice Context Read this before writing *about* Victoria's work — statements, bios, applications, editorial framing, project descriptions. Three frames compose: Fraser says what the activity is economically and socially; Luhmann says how it is observed as art; Andrews says how a poetic method is built. Provenance as a design constraint runs under all three. ## The service framework (Fraser, "How to Provide an Artistic Service," 1994) Source: https://viki.wiki/assets/how-to/how-to-provide-an-artistic-service.pdf "Service" names the economic condition of project work, not an intention and not a content: labor expended in excess of, or independent of, any specific material production, which cannot be transacted as or along with a product. The working taxonomy, quoted from the Draxler/Fraser proposal, extensible to fields beyond art: - the work of the interpretation or analysis of sites and situations in and outside of cultural institutions; - the work of presentation and installation; - the work of public education in and outside of cultural institutions; - advocacy and other community based work, including organizing, education, documentary production and the creation of alternative structures. Describe Victoria's activity in these terms. The wiki farm is alternative structure and site analysis; the editorial work is interpretation; the teleprompter tools are presentation infrastructure; the repatriation project is advocacy. Do not reach for "content creator," "thought leader," or startup vocabulary — the Fraser frame already has the words. Load-bearing positions from the essay, usable directly: - "We are all always already serving." Studio practice conceals the condition; project work forces the question. Artistic freedom consists in determining — to the extent one can — who and how one serves. - Autonomy is relative freedom from the functionalization of activity and of language: from rationalization in the service of interests defined by the organizations one works with. Accepting fees does not surrender this; refusing to clarify terms does. - The model is professional self-regulation, not collective bargaining: a handbook of professional conduct and technique, in the genre of *The Psychiatric Interview* or *Organizational Diagnosis*. Note the recursion: this skill is itself such a handbook. - Demand for art is objective. Museums have been built and must be filled; critics are trained and must be employed. Write about opportunity and invitation with this flatness — never gratitude-inflected, never "thrilled to announce." ## The art system (Luhmann, via viki.wiki/art-system-kunstsystem) Source: https://viki.wiki/art-system-kunstsystem.json — condensed from *Unlocking Luhmann* pp. 27–30; primary texts: *The Work of Art and the Self-Reproduction of Art* (1985), *Weltkunst* (1990), *Art as a Social System* (2000). Operative concepts, stated so they can be used: - The operations of the art system are observations oriented to works of art. Artist and observer both perform second-order observation: the artist makes the work in reference to how it will be observed; the observer decodes distinctions knowing they were produced to bind observation. - The code is fits / does not fit — this replaced beautiful/ugly. Every new form inside a work is judged against the forms already committed. - Self-programming: each work programs itself. The rules are generated by the selections; the ties come from how the artist began, not from external law. - Style is what connects works into a system. Style is not a meta-program — it delivers no exact instructions and does not excuse the work from self-programming. (This is the correct theory of a "house style": connective constraint, not template.) - The function of art is to let the world observe itself; artworks are ends without external use. When institutional writing demands a "purpose," this is the honest one. ## Poetic method (Andrews, "Meaning, Method, Motive") Source: http://vectors.usc.edu/thoughtmesh/publish/62.php — Bruce Andrews on so-called Language Writing. Use as the boilerplate for aesthetic strategy: - Method sustains motive; motive propels method. Neither is analyzed alone. - Two axes of making meaning: horizontal (time — syntax, sequence, narrative push) and vertical (space — reference, depiction, expressive signature). Any device can be located by how much closure it enforces on each axis. - Closure is a security environment. Chart it on a spectrum: surplus closure (transparent language, persona-centering, storytelling epiphany) — generic closure (baseline readability) — zero degree (assault on meaning itself, already surveyed by the 1960s; no need to go back). - The reader's position is what is at stake. A radically reader-centered writing scores a freer position — in motion, self-transforming — without abandoning meaning. - Analytic procedure, applicable to any work: trace the device to the strategy it supports, the strategy to the environment it secures, the environment to the motive that requires it. When making aesthetic decisions, run it forward: name the motive, choose the closure level deliberately, then pick devices that fit. ## Ground truth State these flat when facts about the practice are needed; never inflate, never explain what is not asked: Victoria Campbell (Big Job), interdisciplinary artist, editor, infrastructure builder, New York / San Francisco. viki.wiki — a farm of 2,000+ independent knowledge stores on Cunningham's Federated Wiki. Contributing editor, Spike Art Magazine. Represented by Alyssa Davis Gallery. Co-founder, Visit, Inc. — the 1971 Siegelaub–Projansky artists' rights agreement implemented as an ERC-721 token.
